Are you paddling in the shallows
Are your ankles getting wet
Safe within your comfy margins
You are in command and yet
There is so much out there for you
Drowning in the spirits flow
Come and wade out in the water
There is much you need to know.

SOFT SCOOP

By Mike Bullock

I’m wrestling with the ice cream
Inside this soft scoop box
My spoon is bent, my patience spent
I’m trying to outfox
The barrier before me
To get my just dessert
I’ll hack at that unyielding mass
No matter what the hurt.

SUPERHERO

By Mike Bullock

Jesus is our superhero
Though like Batman, He is not
Doesn’t get on with the devil
Cause he hurts us quite a lot
Jesus won a special battle
Died upon an ugly cross
Rose again to give us victory
It’s our gain,the devils’ loss.

Because of God’s grace, he loves us anyway, and is still giving us a chance.“I’m So Unworthy” is a song that I wrote about someone choosing their own path as opposed to the path God laid out for them, inspired by Psalms 16:4  “ Thou will show me the path of life in thy present is fullness of  joy at thy night, at thy hand there are pleasures forever  more.”

Here’s the poem and a few thoughts about lessons that take a long time to learn.

If there’s one thing I’m learning at seminary, it’s the importance of engaging the heart along with the mind. This seems like a no-brainer, but it’s easy to forget what seminary and the ministry are all about in the midst of academia. Especially as I’m starting out, there’s a lot of stress, which is mostly self-induced. But in all reality, seminary can feel very much overwhelming, so here’s a poem I wrote trying to express all the angst and stress and love I don’t think I could feel anywhere else but here.

My brother and his fiancé, now wife, are both redheaded. Now, when I went about planning this wedding toast, it would be easy to make jokes about the redheaded babies they’re going to have, but that’s the easy laugh. There’s no challenge there and it doesn’t really tell us anything about the couple. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t drop this type of humor entirely, it just can’t be our focus, or we’ll miss the whole point of the toast, which is to honor the groom, his new bride, and God.
